Communication and Media Intern
Erasmus Student Network - Brussels, Belgium
ESN Social Media
I did a 6 month internship at ESN, Europe's biggest student organisation that aims to support and develop student mobility.
I worked alongside a diverse group of people of different nationalities and ethnic backgrounds. During my time at ESN, I learned about visual branding, media management, graphic design, and copywriting.
My proudest moments as an intern at ESN was managing campaigns and contributing to ESN projects such as:
-
#ErasmusAtHome Campaign during the Covid lockdown
-
Intercultural Dialogue Campaign, as an aim to promote inclusivity and shed light on social issues such as racism, cultural identity, and homophobia
-
Producing a video series for ESN's 'Erasmus Skills' project to promote the benefits of student mobility in the workplace

In order to capture the experiences of students and trainees across Europe regarding the impact of COVID-19 on their mobility experience, ESN launched a research report on the topic. I was responsible for promoting the survey and creating content based on the results.
During quarantine, we had a meeting for new media strategies to keep our audience engaged with our content. One of those things was creating weekly challenges that students can interact with through the comment section. Fortunately in ESN, we have a team called the COMCOM team which is the communication team in ESN who are from different ESN sections. We all collaborated ideas and gave a helping hand in creating the templates.
Of course, part of running social media accounts is trying to be as inclusive as possible. For Easter Sunday, we understood that not everyone celebrates Easter but we also didn't want to leave out those who celebrate this day. So we focused on the values of Easter Sunday (family, togetherness, love) and I picked a photo that was fitting with the Covid Lockdown situation. This post was such a success that it was one of the most liked photo of ESN on IG and FB.

'Unity in Diversity' is a common saying in ESN. We wanted to ensure our audience that this is not just a saying we throw around casually to look progressive and that we aim to be part of the solution. As an organisation that promotes inclusivity and equality, we wanted to express that we fully support the Black Lives Matter movement.

I was tasked with managing the Intercultural Dialogue campaign and I had to design graphics and got to collaborate with the press team who wrote ESN blogs. This was my favourite project that I got to do in ESN and I felt that it showcases how I've improved my skills in terms of using Photoshop and Illustrator.
Copy: Our cultural differences make it necessary for us to consciously reflect upon our own behaviour and cultural bias in order to reach a line of understanding and respect. ✨ What is something you want to let others know about your culture?
Copy: Cognates are words that have a common etymological origin; because of this, they have similar meanings and often similar spellings in two different languages. You might already know some foreign words without even realising! 💬

We had a previous contest on Valentine's Day where people who went on Erasmus got to submit their love stories during their study abroad. I came up with the idea of taking the best quotes from these stories and make a visual for them. The idea was to have them in a cinematic format to encapsulate the feeling of being in love like in the movies.
